Major Canadian Bank: Case Study

CableSeal was engaged to supply and install brush seals on approximately 40,000 square feet of raised computer floor in the Toronto area.

Project Description

Under floor air pressure was inconsistent across the data centre, which resulted in the some IT Equipment cabinets receiving insufficient cooling airflow. Engineering staff determined that sealing the existing cable openings below the IT Equipment cabinets would provide increased and more consistent under floor air pressure.

Criteria

The Data Centre facilities are mission critical. Any solution could not interfere with the ongoing operations under any circumstance. The existing AC (Cooling) capacity needed to be restored to the desired N+1 design capacity in the near term. Data Centre maintenance staff had other priorities that precluded sealing the floor in the desired timeframe, necessitating an outsourced installation. A successful solution would seal as close to 100% of all openings as possible (closure rate). A successful solution required a permanent, repeatable seal that could not easily be defeated.

The Engineering Staff selected CableSeal (operated by Teeple Contracting Services Ltd.) as they were able to provide and install a suitable product in a timely and safe manner.

CableSeal was engaged to supply and install brush seals on approximately 40,000 square feet of raised computer floor in the Toronto area.

Follow-up

Installation was completed within 6 weeks of the start date, and 12 weeks of contract signing.
Over 99% of all openings are now sealed.
No disruptions or downtime occurred during installation (no incidents of any kind).
Under floor air pressure was significantly improved resulting in better DC air conditioning.
Currently considering upgrading ACUs with variable frequency drives to realize the operating cost savings that are now available.
